We see these things and we don’t know why. Why is the baby found safely placed in the tree after the tornado? Who sets the replacement hubcab you need on the side of the curb? Who puts extra food in the paper bag that you can share with your friends? These are all works of the lesser angels. If you serendipitously do extremely good deeds or accidentally save someone’s life, you’ll come back to earth as a lesser angel. I’ve only experienced the lesser angel of grocery works.
The lesser angel doesn’t complain about the tasks at hand. She goes to the grocery store and buys all the dented cans at full price, and all the meats with $6.66 on them. She destroys the beast marks and donates the meat to charity. She leaves coupons already cut and ready to go on the redeemable items. She’ll find perishable items discarded on the dog food aisle and restock them in the cooler right before they go into the temperature danger zone. You may never catch a glimpse of one, but there’s only two documented clues. 1: The automatic doors can’t sense their presence, so they have to hang out until a human enters before they squeeze through the door without ever touching it. They also pay in cash, in exact change to the penny, and bring it reusable gold-colored bags.
